Equity for better science and a better society

NCCR Automation is committed to promoting diversity and expanding the pipeline of researchers, to draw in more young people from the many groups that are still underrepresented in science and technology. Our vision is a constructive, creative and productive work environment, and broader society, that leaves no one out. To pursue this, we are working on:

  • Promote understanding of the importance of diverse working groups.
  • Support equal opportunity initiatives in education, from high school to university level.
  • Provide students and young researchers with opportunities for personal and professional development.
  • Use automation to further social equity, through consciously directed innovation in transportation, energy systems, industry and beyond.
  • Apply a social equity lens to all our research, seeking out blind spots and opportunities for improvement.

What we do

Our strategy encompasses both internal medium-term initiatives, to support young researchers and students, and external long-term initiatives, dedicated to fostering equality in the broader society.

Diversity-aware outreach: We actively look for opportunities to reach underrepresented groups in our activities for kids and general audiences.

We co-organised and actively participated in the past NCCRWomen and Power of Networking initiatives.

For our members

We promote a diverse and flexible work and study environment and provide a number of programmes to support that. Our goal is to enrich and broaden the automation community in both academia and industry, starting with our own community.

Professional development and career opportunity programme: we offer our members a wide range of workshops and career development avenues.

Funding programmes: Our members have access to a number of internal funding opportunities to support their activities, along with being eligible for the SNSF Postdoc.Mobility grant.

Family support programme: SNSF flexibility grants are available to help researchers to reconcile their research activities and academic career with care duties. We also offer childcare support for attending conferences, and of course paternity leave.
