ZAPPY – robotics workshops for girls & boys

A robot is a programmable machine, made up of electronic parts and mechanical parts, capable of performing tasks autonomously. The aim of this course is to learn about robotics in its entirety, from construction to programming. The meticulous electronics work and active participation of the children are expected. Creativity, peer exchanges and learning by doing are also part of the teaching program. Teachers, who are EPFL women and men students, help as role models to shatter stereotypes and obstacles related to gender.
Youngsters build step by step their own robot by learning and assembling the various elements. Once assembled, a programming section puts the robot into action. The workshops increase their knowledge and interest for science technology and engineering.
In spring 2025, thanks to the NCCR Automation, EPFL campus in Lausanne welcomed 16 boys and 16 girls during eleven two-hour sessions. Certificates were handled during the closing session with the presence of parents. Following it, a proud and thankful mother wrote to us:
“My 11-year-old daughter received her Zappy certificate today after taking the robotics course at EPFL. She is passionate about science. Since her parents have different backgrounds, we've been looking for activities to fuel her interest for a long time. It's great that EPFL offers these activities for girls. She always comes back very inspired, not only by what she learns, but also by the other participants and the role models she meets among the speakers. She now dreams of studying at EPFL or ETHZ once she completes her Baccalaureate and IB.”
