Recommendation systems decide what we see online. They are allocators of viability. At NCCR Automation, we ask which designs actually serve society.
Stefania Ionescu is a postdoctoral researcher at the Automatic Control Laboratory, ETH Zurich, working on responsible automation. She holds a BA in Mathematics from the University of Cambridge, an MSc in Logic and Computation (with distinction) from the ILLC, University of Amsterdam, and a PhD in Computer Science (with distinction) from the University of Zurich. She studies how recommender systems shape visibility and outcomes for users, content creators, and society, combining game theory, algorithmic fairness, agent-based modeling, control, and network science. Outside the lab, she enjoys board games, Dungeons & Dragons, and hiking.
