Automation and control is the perfect way to apply abstract mathematical concepts to systems that have a concrete societal impact.
Tudor Oancea is a PhD student at the Predictive Control Laboratory (LA3) at EPFL under Prof. Colin Jones. He holds a BSc in Mathematics (2022) and MSc in Computational Science and Engineering (2025) from EPFL. He has designed and deployed real-time nonlinear optimal controllers and predictive safety filters for autonomous race cars and VTVL rockets during his time at the EPFL Racing Team, the Gruyère Space Program, and Embotech. His research focuses on numerical optimization and efficient computational algorithms deployment on heterogeneous hardware.
