Ensuring that automation is ethical is vital for all our futures.

David Shaw is Senior Scientist at the Institute for Biomedical Ethics at the University of Basel and Associate Professor of Health Ethics and Law at Maastricht University, the Netherlands.  

He is a recognised international expert on research ethics and scientific integrity and has participated in several large European consortia on research ethics, including EUREC, ENERI and the new project iRECS, which focuses on ethical review of emerging technologies. He has acted as a consultant for the Swiss Federal Office of Public Health, as an expert member of the Swiss Academy of Medical Sciences working group on conflicts of interest affecting medical professionals, and on the UK’s National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guideline development committee on shared decision making. 

Dr Shaw graduated with an MA in Philosophy and English Literature from the University of Glasgow in 1999, and an MSc in Philosophy from the University of Edinburgh in 2001. He obtained his PhD at the University of Lausanne in 2005 and went on to work in the philosophy department at the University of St Andrews and the medical school at the University of Glasgow. In 2011 he obtained a Masters in Medical Law.
