Research Associate
At NCCR Automation, we breathe intelligence into mobility. Driven by love for mathematical challenges and AI's symphony, we shape the future of seamless and resilient transportation, empowering humans to navigate the evolving landscape with finesse.

Robert Fonod, a Research Associate at EPFL's Urban Transportation Systems Laboratory (LUTS), holds a Ph.D. in Automatic Control from the University of Bordeaux and BSc/MSc degrees in Cybernetics from the Technical University of Kosice. Robert's career trajectory includes roles as an Assistant Professor at TU Delft, a Post-Doctoral Fellow at the Technion, and a Research Scientist at the French-German Research Institute of Saint-Louis (ISL). He also held visiting research appointments at ESA and Thales Alenia Space. All these roles and experiences collectively contribute to his expertise in the domain of aerospace Guidance, Navigation, and Control (GNC). During his sabbatical, Robert earned a Master's in Computer Science from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, sparking his shift towards Machine Learning and the domain of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). He is a Senior Member of IEEE and an Associate Editor for the IEEE Transactions on Aerospace and Electronic Systems. His current research focuses on the application of machine learning to ITS. Specifically, he delves into drone-based traffic monitoring, emphasizing accurate and automated geo-referenced trajectory extraction and traffic state estimation.
