"It is great to leave your comfort zone and your normal working environment"

What do Alpiq, GWF, Hamilton Medical, VAT, and Zurich Insurance have in common? A deep interest in control and optimisation! We were happy to host them at the third iteration of our Workshop on Control and Computational Methods together with researchers from ETH, EPFL, Empa, ZHAW, FHNW, OST, and Inspire AG.

In perfect weather, fifteen engineers from industry and fifteen researchers from the NCCR Automation spent a day at ETH’s beautiful Villa Hatt to learn about concrete control and optimisation challenges that the different companies face and discuss how the latest developments in control theory might help to drive innovation.

The format was greatly appreciated by both sides. “Many of the challenges of the other companies are actually similar to ours”, says one participant from industry, “we are looking forward to collaborating and trying these new ideas.” Another liked the stimulating environment: “It is great to leave your comfort zone and your normal working environment and have this technical exchange with others. It gives you new perspectives on your problem.”

Would they join again? Absolutely! All the participants would recommend this workshop to their friends and are highly motivated to start industry-academia collaborations. The NCCR Automation is proud to facilitate this exchange, and we are looking forward to hosting the next Workshop on Control and Computational Methods in spring of 2026. Reach out to us if you want to be part of it!
