Congratulations to Paul Scharnhorst for winning IEEE CSS Swiss Chapter Young Author Best Journal Paper Award 2024

18-06-2024
The IEEE CSS Swiss Chapter Young Author Best Journal Paper Award 2024 was presented during the NCCR Automation annual retreat in June 2024.
Award

The award was granted for the paper:

P. Scharnhorst, E. T. Maddalena, Y. Jiang, and C. N. Jones, “Robust Uncertainty Bounds in Reproducing Kernel Hilbert Spaces: A Convex Optimization Approach,” IEEE Trans. Automat. Contr., vol. 68, no. 5, pp. 2848–2861, May 2023, doi: 10.1109/TAC.2022.3227907

with the award committee giving following motivation: «The paper is being recognized for its novel approach to derive uncertainty bounds for kernel-based function approximators. The approach differs from concentration bounds currently used in the community – it breaks the independence assumption while providing robust guarantees, which can be incorporated in robust optimization and control»

Congratulations also to the other two finalists:

  1. Z. He, S. Bolognani, J. He, F. Dörfler, and X. Guan, “Model-Free Nonlinear Feedback Optimization,” IEEE Trans. Automat. Contr., pp. 1–16, 2023, doi: 10.1109/TAC.2023.3341752.
  2. C. L. Galimberti, L. Furieri, L. Xu, and G. Ferrari-Trecate, “Hamiltonian Deep Neural Networks Guaranteeing Nonvanishing Gradients by Design,” IEEE Trans. Automat. Contr., vol. 68, no. 5, pp. 3155–3162, May 2023, doi: 10.1109/TAC.2023.3239430.
