Using more solar power without expanding the electricity grid: researchers at the Automatic Control Laboratory (IfA) have shown that the capacity of existing grids can be increased significantly through the coordinated control of solar installations.

At the beginning of September we uprooted the whole consortium for 3 days in Gruyères. Thank you to everyone who made it such a fun and successful event.

Using dynamic programming, as introduced previously, we eventually found the shortest route to the summit. We are finally at the top of the mountain! Naturally, many of us will directly reach for our phones. The award is handed out once every three years and honours the thesis with most significance of potential of business impact, likelihood of business impact to actually occur, novelty of the methods developed, and societal impact of the product/service involved.

Sophie Hall, a doctoral student at D-ITET’s Automatic Control Laboratory (IfA) and NCCR Automation, has been researching carbon-aware computing within Google’s global data centre network. Alongside Ana Radovanovic, Technical Lead for Energy Analytics and Carbon-Aware Computing as well as project leader, she shares insights into this unique and mutually beneficial academic-industry collaboration.
